Merry Sun is an artist whose work dwells between the sonic, visual and written. She received a BFA from Sam Fox School of Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis in 2019 with a degree in sculpture and philosophy, and she received her MFA in Sound Art from the Visual Arts Department at Columbia University in New York City in 2023. Sun’s practice consists of constructing compositional infrastructures to address the sense of “unbelonging” that accompanies movement and migration. These infrastructural systems, both physical and semantic, delineate permeable spaces that facilitate the interaction between individual subjectivities and their surroundings. Wielding the porosity of sound, Sun’s work dissolves place into space by blurring the edges of adjacencies. She builds sounding systems in an attempt to locate the coincidence in which discriminatory borders are dismantled and personal boundaries are protected. Sun currently resides in Kansas City, Missouri.
