Caroline Clerc is a Los Angeles-based artist working in photography and installation. Her work posits landscapes as complex sites of recognition and cultural construction. Her work is first performed by immersion in the environment through long walks. Images from each walk are paired or composited and in-studio constructions using found materials are photographed to reflect environmental concerns and reframe our relationship to ecology.
Her MFA is from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and her projects have appeared nationally and internationally, including recent exhibits at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery, the Caetani Centre, Canada, Kunstbezirk Galerie, Germany and Askerlinna, Finland. She has been awarded numerous artist residencies to support site-specific research and bodies of work based on each landscape and local landscape traditions.
Fellowships and residencies include Obracadobra, Mexico, Millay Colony, NY, Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale, Norway, ‘Nature, Art and Habitat’ (NAHR), Italy, Taft-Nicholson Center, Montana, Caetani Centre, Canada, NAIRS Foundation, Switzerland and Serlachius, Finland. Caroline Clerc is also an Associate Professor of Teaching at the Roski School of Art and Design, University of Southern California, where she co-founded and chaired an area encompassing media theory, video, photo and internet art, and teaches studio art courses in photography.
